Genesis 26:17-27:46

  • Notice another covenant made - Difference between covenants and contracts?  Here's a good breakdown on what covenant means in the Bible.
  • Note the importance of names of places and names of people.  The names tell stories too
  • Family dysfunction shows up again
  • Put yourself in Esau's position in this reading - how are you feeling?  What are you thinking?
  • Why only one blessing?  Ancient tradition held that there was only one "big" blessing given by the father to the first born towards the end of life. The power tradition holds
  • Hittites - notice how the hatred of the hittites by specific people influences the rest

Matthew 9:1-17

  • Power again - Jesus' power to heal the paralytic
  • Call of Matthew - Jesus calls the willing, not the popular or powerful
  • Fasting and wineskin analogy - Jesus is doing a new thing.  Old skins don't work anymore.  The call of Matthew fits with this

Psalm 10 & Proverbs 3:7-10

  • Proverbs 3:7-10 - Do not be wise in your own eyes.  What a profound statement.  What about those in our lives and in the world who see themselves and proclaim themselves as the wise ones?
