January 22 - Gan 24:52-26:16, Mt 8:18-34, Psalm 10, Proverbs 3:7-8

Genesis 24:52-26:16

  • Put yourself in Rebekah's position in the story. How are you feeling with what is happening?  What is happening between the lines?  Remember, this is just the "highlights" - not going in depth.
  • The blessings offered - why don't we offer blessings in this way today?  What a gift it would be do to that for others
  • Notice that Hagar's well shows up again
  • I love the language that is used when Abraham dies - he was gathered to his people. How does that feel for a way to talk about those who die?
  • Jacob and Esau saga begins - Totally dysfunctional family.  But aren't all families in some way?  What about your family?
  • Isaac - like father like son

Matthew 8:18-34

  • The question that stirred for me as I read this was "Is Jesus central to my life?"
  • Notice again Jesus' power on display - here power over nature.  Look at this with what has already been seen
  • Power again - this time over the demonic and over evil.  And also notice how people respond - not with gratitude but with fear

Psalm 10 (Proverbs readings will be covered tomorrow)

  • Psalm 10 - Going to do the whole of Psalm 10 today and then the whole of the Proverbs readings tomorrow.
  • We've all asked these questions that are in the opening of the Psalm and seen the same in the world.  How does it feel to ask those questions in your life?  How have others responded when you have asked them aloud?
  • Psalm ends with an affirmation like many of these kinds of Psalms do.  With all that has been said, ends with a "yet will I trust."  Both can exist together.  The questions and the trust.
  • Proverbs 3:7-8 - Will be reflected on tomorrow
